DATABASE PACKAGE
IN CLIPPER (1992, 1995)
- is available at http://www.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/clipper/dbm113.zip
or locally at dbm113d.zip
and is written with about 25,000 lines of source code,
- is a fully-fledged development for a stand-alone, robust and
easy-to-use database program for PC platforms such as WINDOWS-XP, WINDOWS-95 or
DOS,
- supports mouse (this is done by assembly language
interface as the native language doesn't have support
for such feature),
- provides means for systematic tailoring of applications
by supporting user-defined external macros and execution
blocks,
- is used to maintain some of my own
databases,
- is recommended by Silicon Valley in the category of Database,
Genealogy, Spread Sheet and Related Programs for DOS.
- The top menu color under Windows-XP does not look as good as
under the old DOS screen. A quick binary fixing can be done by
modifying the file dbm.ovl from hex 4E to 57 at 2D676, from 2B
to 00 at 2D679, and from 20 to 61 at 2E341. The resulting program
(with the new dbm.ovl) is thus called
version 1.13a there. The demo program DEMO.BAT is also best changed to
DEMO-xp.bat for Windows-XP.
TEXT LINE
MANIPULATOR IN C (1993-96)
- is available at http://www.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/txtutl/lm206.zip,
- is a file or stream line
manipulator,
- provide screen and sound support for DOS platform,
- has a fully developed scheme for command line
options that is most suitable for DOS and MS-WINDOWS
platforms.
- portable to UNIX and DOS,
- is rated * * * * 1/2 by
Free
Software For DOS. Some of the comments there are as follows:
LM is described as a text file "line manipulator,"
yet this description sorely underestimates its uses. ...... I
include LM in this list because of its combination of small size (37K)
and versatility to perform a wide variety of general filtering and
formatting chores. Thankfully, some sample commands and batch files
are provided which the novice user can easily modify to his or her
needs. The option list is nearly endless (uses all 26 letters as
options -upper and lower case- and then resorts to using symbols!).
- Last version 2.13 June 2000 available lm213.zip - never uploaded.
ENVIRONMENTAL
RETRIEVAL OF ERRORLEVEL (1994)
- is available at ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/envutil/err2env.zip,
- exports errorlevel to environment under DOS (this is
done by using in-depth system knowledges),
- uses self-calling algorithm to resolve addressing
uncertainty for the unknown versions,
- is selected by Free Software for DOS in the category of Batch Utilities for DOS.
- Software critic Howard Schwartz's comments:
Dos IF statements need a lot enhancing to test for various
conditions: err2env.zip is a life saver that lets you store the
current error level in an environment variable and/or set it
yourself.
